Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. In fact, seeking help is an act of courage, not weakness. It takes great strength to recognize when you could benefit from support and to take that first brave step. We all need help at times — and reaching out doesn’t diminish your strength, it honors it. In our work together, we’ll explore and build on your existing strengths while gently working through the challenges you’re facing. You don’t have to carry this alone.

What’s the difference between talking to you, my best friend, or my family?

Friends and family can be wonderful sources of support, but they’re not trained to help in the ways a therapist can. Therapy offers a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can explore your feelings openly — without worrying about how it may affect others or what they might think. As a mental health professional, I’ll help you view your situation through new lenses, learn practical tools, and deepen self-awareness. Also, what you share here is confidential, giving you the freedom to process deeply and honestly. Sometimes, leaning too heavily on friends or family during a difficult time can strain those relationships. Therapy offers the space where your healing is the sole focus.

What if I can’t afford the full rate?

We understand that therapy is an investment in your well-being. To make it more accessible, we offer a limited number of sliding-scale openings based on financial need. We can also discuss flexible scheduling options or lower-cost referral resources if needed. During your free consultation, we’ll explore what feels sustainable for you.

What telehealth platform do you use?

We use a secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform that protects your privacy and makes meeting online simple. You’ll receive a unique link before each session—no downloads required. You can join from your phone, tablet, or computer.

How soon can I get an appointment?

Most new clients can schedule their first session within one to two weeks. We also offer a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your needs and determine the best next steps. If you’re in crisis or need immediate support, we can provide appropriate resources and referrals.

What if I’m new to therapy—what should I expect?

It’s completely normal to feel nervous or unsure before starting therapy. The first session is a conversation—an opportunity for you to share what’s been happening, ask questions, and learn how we can work together. My role is to create a safe, supportive space where you can feel seen, heard, and understood as we begin your path toward healing and growth.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be a helpful part of healing, but it often works best when combined with therapy. Medication may ease symptoms, but it doesn’t address the root causes of your struggles or equip you with the tools to manage life’s ups and downs long-term. Therapy gives you space to explore, heal, and build resilience, so that your growth extends beyond symptom relief and toward lasting change.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Every person’s journey is unique, so therapy will look a little different for each individual. Together, we’ll identify your goals and what you hope to gain from our work. Sessions will be a collaborative space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences at your own pace. You’ll be invited to reflect, learn new tools, and take small steps toward the life you want to create. Above all, this will be a space where your story is honored and your growth is supported.

How long will it take?

That’s a great question — and one without a one-size-fits-all answer. The length of therapy depends on many factors, including the nature of what brings you here, your goals, and your personal readiness for growth. Some people find relief after a few sessions, while others value the deeper ongoing work that unfolds over time. What matters most is that therapy moves at a pace that feels right for you, and that we create a space where meaningful and lasting change can happen.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

I’m so glad to hear that — your openness and commitment will be such a gift to this process. The more you engage with the work — both in and between sessions — the more you’ll get from it. Be as honest as you can, even when it feels vulnerable. Take time to reflect on what we discuss, and practice the tools and insights we explore together. And be patient and gentle with yourself — healing is not always linear, but every step forward matters. I’ll be with you every step of the way.

What if I don’t know what to talk about in therapy?

That’s completely okay — you don’t need to have it all figured out before you come. Many people start therapy simply knowing they want life to feel different, but aren’t sure where to begin. Part of our work together is helping you gently explore what matters most to you, what’s weighing on your heart, and what you hope to shift or heal.

Will I be judged for what I share?

Absolutely not. Therapy is a space where you are invited to show up fully as you are, with all of your thoughts, feelings, questions, and struggles. You are welcome here, and you will be met with compassion, respect, and understanding.

Do I have to be religious to work with you?

Not at all. While I offer faith-integrated therapy for those who desire it, I honor and respect each client’s individual beliefs, values, and background. Whether you are deeply spiritual, exploring your faith, or not connected to faith at all — this is a space where your story will be honored, and your healing supported.

How will I know if therapy is working?

Therapy is a journey, and progress can look different for everyone. You might notice subtle changes — feeling more self-aware, responding differently to stress, improving relationships, or having more moments of peace and joy. We will check in regularly to reflect on your growth and adjust our approach to support your evolving goals.

What if I start therapy and then feel nervous or want to stop?

That’s a very normal feeling, especially when doing something vulnerable like therapy. You are always in control of your therapy process, and we will move at a pace that feels safe for you. If difficult feelings arise, we’ll talk about them together — often, those are moments when deep healing is beginning to happen.

Will my faith be respected in therapy?

Yes — absolutely. If your faith is an important part of your life, it will be honored and integrated into our work together in a way that feels authentic and supportive to you. Whether you want to explore spiritual questions, lean on your faith for strength, or simply have your beliefs respected in the therapeutic space — this will be a safe and welcoming environment for your whole self, including your faith.

Will this be a safe and affirming space for me as an LGBTQIA+ person?

Yes. You are fully welcome here, exactly as you are. This is a space where your identity, experiences, and relationships will be met with respect, understanding, and affirmation. You do not have to hide or explain who you are here. Together, we will work toward healing and growth in a space that celebrates your full humanity.
